Rustic but comfortable accommodations
Leaf River Estuary Lodge was built by Tasiujaq resident Johnny Cain. The lodge complex includes a modern kitchen and dining facility. Accommodations are somewhat rustic but comfortable. Toilets, running water and hot showers are provided. The bunk beds have mattresses but guests are responsible for their own sleeping bags, pillow cases, towels and toiletries.
One experienced Inuit guide is provided for every 2 or 3 anglers. Fishing is done from outboard-powered freighter canoes. Usually, drift fishing is most effective for arctic char and salmon, but shore fishing is also productive, especially at low tide.
What to Bring
To be provided by clients:
- Pillow case
- Wash cloth and towel
- Sleeping bag
- Toothbrush and toiletries
- Medicines
- Insect repellent (for mosquitoes)
- Head net (not needed, unless the air gets still)
- Boots for shallow water, 1 foot tall
- Waders for fishing at low tide
- Stocking cap for chilly weather
- Rain wear, preferably goretex or equivalent
- Sweater
- Light spinning tackle and/or fly rod (#8, #9, or #10)
- Lures and/or flies
- Fly reels should have 200 yards of backing
- Camera and extra batteries
- Flashlight (not needed in June and July)
- Binoculars
